The gameplay trailer for Homura: The Crimson Warriors is now live, giving Western fans their first detailed look at the Sengoku-era otome ahead of its March 31, 2026, Nintendo Switch launch.

Published by IDEA FACTORY INTERNATIONAL and developed by IDEA FACTORY / DESIGN FACTORY, Homura was originally released in Japan in 2018 on PS Vita. Now, the historical fantasy romance makes its Western debut with updated systems and full English localization.

A Sengoku War Story Centered on the Sanada Ten Braves

Set fourteen years after the Battle of Sekigahara, Homura takes place during the final years of the Warring States period. The Tokugawa shogunate seeks to eliminate the Toyotomi clan, leading to a final stand at Osaka Castle.

At the center of the story is protagonist Mutsumi Mochizuki, who finds herself alongside Nobushige Sanada and the legendary Sanada Ten Braves. Historical figures, assassins known as the Ura Yagyu, and shifting political alliances form the backdrop to a narrative that blends romance with battlefield tension.

For otome fans who prefer historical grounding over purely fictional settings, this is one of the stronger Sengoku-based romance premises arriving on Switch this year.

Energy Reading and the Ring System Add Strategic Depth

One of the most interesting mechanics shown in the trailer is the Energy Reading system.

Mutsumi has the ability to monitor each love interest’s “Ring” status and affection level. Increasing a Ring can unlock powerful abilities during story sequences, but it comes at a cost to the character’s physical health. Push too far, and the consequences can affect outcomes.

This creates a management layer rarely seen in traditional otome titles. Instead of only selecting dialogue choices, players must balance emotional development with resource risk.

For longtime otome fans, this suggests branching routes influenced not just by affection thresholds, but by strategic decisions as well.

Ninja Scrolls and Atlas System Encourage Route Exploration

The trailer also showcases two systems designed to make route replay smoother:

  • Atlas: A record of previously visited locations throughout the narrative.
  • Ninja Scrolls: A chapter summary system that allows players to revisit prior events and adjust affection and Ring levels to alter outcomes.

This structure encourages experimentation without forcing full restarts, something especially valuable in multi-ending visual novels.

Leveling Up as a Ninja

Beyond romance, Homura includes a progression system where Mutsumi can increase her ninja rank throughout the story. Reaching Master rank strengthens her ability to fight alongside the Crimson Warriors.

While still firmly a visual novel, these additions give the title more mechanical identity compared to dialogue-only otome releases.

Editions and Preorders

Homura: The Crimson Warriors launches on Nintendo Switch in North America on March 31, 2026, with digital and physical versions available.

The physical Standard Edition includes a trading card pack featuring five cards, including one random holographic card. A digital Deluxe Edition will also be available and includes a 20-page digital short story collection and a 26-track digital soundtrack.

In addition, the Japanese voiceover with English subtitles is confirmed. Preorders are currently live via the publisher and select retailers.

Western localization of PS Vita-era otome titles continues to fill gaps left behind when the platform declined outside Japan. With Switch now serving as the primary home for console visual novels, Homura arrives at a time when interest in historical otome and Sengoku-themed narratives is steadily growing again.

Between its Energy Reading system, multi-ending structure, and its focus on the Sanada Ten Braves, this release could attract both dedicated otome fans and players interested in narrative-heavy historical fantasy.

We’ll have more coverage as we approach launch, including impressions if review access becomes available.
