Hoyoverse has been teasing the addition of Nod-Krai for a while now. Their first real reveal came during the release of a behind-the-scenes video of their storytelling and development process for the new region on April 30, 2025.

Hoyoverse has been giving fans tons of sneak peaks of Nod-Krai since, and has now launched Nod-Krai’s first character Ineffa in Version 5.8.

Now, it’s official. The Traveler and Paimon will end their journey and head to Nod-Krai.

At the end of the new 5.8 quest, The Journey Home | Song of the Welkin Moon – Prelude, Grandmaster Varka sent a personal letter to the Traveler inviting him to Nod-Krai.

There is so much to unpack about why the Traveler’s journey into Nod-Krai will become a peak moment in Genshin Impact.

Let’s break down all the reasons why you should definitely be excited for when Nod-Krai finally becomes playable in the near future.

There Will Be a Showdown With the Fatui

The Pyro Archon, Mavuika revealed to the Traveler at the end of the Natlan archon quest,
Incandescent Ode of Resurrection, that there will be a direct conflict with the Fatui the moment he enters Snezhnaya.

She said she received word of a strange object near the sky near Nod-Krai. They’re called “Ancient Moon Fragments”, which are relics from ancient dragon technology.

She later said that Dottore “The Doctor” is likely involved and has a stronghold in Nod-Krai. This sets up a showdown between the Traveler and the Fatui as soon as he enters the area.

Now, this seems like a pretty sharp jump from the direction of the story. Naturally, the Traveler doesn’t have a direct issue with the Fatui.

Their goal is collect the gnonses. They have total loyalty to the Tsaritsa. The Traveler only wants to find his sister and get answers from the Archons. You would think the Fatui would have no problem with him.

After all, Childe and even Arlecchino (The Knave) were pretty friendly with the Traveler until they have other motives. But, that’s not the case anymore.

And, there are two reasons why.

One, the Traveler is a famous hero known throughout the world now. His journey is still predicated on finding his sister, but he’s often helped the Archons save their nations and even cooperated with them to fight against the Fatui.

While the Traveler can be neutral with characters like Childe, he still holds extreme contempt for them. In fact, he dueled and defeated La Signora, leading to her eventual death at the hands of the Raiden Shogun which is customary of the loser.

The Tsaritsa clearly regards the Fatui as her family, so you know this probably pissed her off.

After helpin Mavuika and Natlan destroy the Abyss, the Traveler is probably seen as a troublesome meddler by the Fatui, especially Dottore.

Two, the Fatui are obviously up to no good. Nod-Krai is an autonomous zone, and it’s proximity next to the Abyss is the main reason why it hasn’t been conquered by another nation.

Why are they even there?

The Tsaritsa’s goal was only to take the Gnoses. Is it her doing that the Fatui are in Nod-Krai, or is this the will of Dottore. If it’s the latter, then it makes sense why the Traveler would be an unwelcome guest.

After Dottore’s trade with Nahida (Lesser Lord Kusanali) in the Sumeru arc, the Traveler has questions for him since he has knowledge even Irminsul doesn’t.

Ultimately, Dottore is up to no good in Nod-Krai and isn’t going to be happy seeing the Traveler who has a reputation for fighting against the Fatui and meddling in their business.

Dottore isn’t beloved within the Fatui like Il Capitano (The Captain). He’s a slimy bastard who is pretty much the Orochimaru of Teyvat. The biggest annoyance for him is people getting in the way of his research.

And from what we learned from The Captain, each Harbringer has their own command. This means the Harbringers all have different goals that may even conflict with one another.

Thus, the truce between the Traveler and the Fatui that was formed in Natlan is now over.

For the first time in Genshin Impact, the Fatui under Dottore’s command, stops playing nice and shows their hand.

What’s Going On With the Moon?

There have been so many hints about the moon throughout Genshin Impact lore.

Perhaps the biggest lore drop was Dottore telling Nahida about a “rumor” that the skies of Tevyat being fake.

This was a huge revelation, as it’s astonishing how Dottore knew about something like this and Sumeru’s Archon didn’t.

Then during the behind-the-scenes video, we learned that the Moon has special primordial power that even predates the seven elements of Teyvat.

Now, we have to go back to the “Ancient Moon Fragments” fragments Mavuika mentioned were floating above Nod-Krai. What is going on in Nod-Krai, and what does it have to do with the moon?

If Nod-Krai is a nation of primordial moon power, than you know what that means for the Traveler.

The Traveler is Getting a New Power Boost

If you’ve been following the plot, you know that the Traveler can interact with each nation’s Statue of the Seven to receive elemental powers.

This makes him a powerhouse wherever he goes. It means he doesn’t need a Vision.

The Traveler isn’t OP, but he can certainly fight with Archons. He’s even strong enough to go toe-to-toe with the Knave (ranked fourth in the Fatui).

Although, yes, she ran circles around him.

But, I’ll give the Traveler the most credit over any Fatui not named The Captain as they all got cheat codes from the Tsaritsa.

The Traveler’s ability to harness new powers means he has the most potential out of anyone in Teyvat and is the only one can change the world’s fate. It also means whatever mysterious moon power lies in Nod-Krai will be mastered by him.

This makes him a true enemy to Dottore by default. We know these two will have to clash.

More clues reveal Dottore has set up camp in Paha Isle under a name called the “Kuuvahki Experimental Design Bureau”.

I’m all for this showdown because the Traveler needs to power up. This should be the arc where he becomes at least comparable to an Archon.

Otherwise, he stands no chance at beating the upper echelon of the Fatui, the Tsaritsa, the Sinners, and finally the Heavenly Principles.

Fortunately, Ineffa gives us some glimpse of what it looks like with her new “Lunar” elemental reaction.

Our friend Sora demoed Ineffa a week ago, so here’s what this looks like:

I have no idea what this primordial moon power is, and I’m sure everyone is dying to find out, too.

We Get to Finally Meet Grandmaster Varka

OG Genshin Impact fans, stand up.

This is possibly the most exciting part of Nod-Krai for me.

There are a lot of reasons why Varka’s presence in Nod-Krai is huge for Genshin Impact, which are:

  1. Why is he even here? He’s a Mondstadt Knight. What business does he have with Nod-Krai? And if he’s here for the Moon, does Venti know?
  2. He’s going to obviously going to be a playable character. His banner debut is going to be incredible.
  3. He’s the strongest person in Mondstadt (Venti doesn’t count… or does he). I think he will be an Anemo user, and there are tons of possibilities on this front. Will he be a tank, deal massive AOE Anemo damage, or dominate the support role. We have no clue.

There are also several more allies we’re going to run into in Nod-Krai. You can see them all here:

So, we get to team up with Varka and several more unique Nod-Krai characters who are all waiting for our arrival?

And we get Columbina, Aino (Ineffa’s creator) and Alice, too?

Yeah, sign me up.

Genshin Impact’s Story Becomes More Well-Rounded

In the behind-the-scenes video, the developers mentioned they sat down with the creators of Final Fantasy and asked for advice on how to pursue continuity with Genshin Impact without drawing the story out too long like a bad soap opera.

They admitted they created tons of lore that deviates from the original plotline of the Traveler finding his lost sister. Now, they have to close loose ends in ways that are conducive to the cohesion of the entire plot.

That’s super hard to do, so they’re taking their time with storyline development. Now, many fans pointed out this is a money-grab to draw revenue while they take their time.

Now, this may very well be true. Genshin Impact makes a shit ton of money. But Hoyoverse does amazing work, so they’re spending their resources well.

They obviously want to make money. They’re a business. Businesses are beholden to their shareholders, sometimes fans be damned. But, I’m not cynical enough to believe this is purely for financial gain to expand the story.

I truly believe they do want to draw readers into an immersive story where we get more lore on:

  • The Sinners
  • Khaenri’ah
  • Each nation’s relationship with the Abyss
  • The relationship between Aether and Lumine
  • The legend of the dragons and their elimination by the Archons
  • The origins of the Fatui
  • Why the Tsaritsa wants the Gnoses
  • The Descenders
  • And lastly the Heavenly Principles.

See, there are way too many things to cover before the Traveler’s journey ends.

Does Hoyo want to make as much as possible.

Absolutely.

Do they want to ruin their legacy that they’ve spend years building to rush the story because the fans are impatient?

Absolutely not.

Nod-Krai’s Concepts Look Incredible

Let’s take a look at some stunning visuals from Nod-Krai:

Based on the concepts, it looks like we’re finally going to get Teyvat’s first gloomy nation.

This is a huge direction shift from the other nations where:

  • Mondstadt was a beautiful and vibrant land that looked like your normal anime-inspired fantasy land (Think Re:Zero).
  • Liyue was our Chinese metropolis with tons of geographic features and nature.
  • Inazuma was… kinda gloomy. But it had more of an ancient Japanese vibe more than anything. This land is beautiful; Nod-Krai isn’t.
  • Sumeru and Fontaine are exceptionally beautiful and nature-inspired.
  • Natlan is like the happiest place in Teyvat.

Now, a lot of people was disappointed that Natlan wouldn’t be some gloomy war-torn nation, and I highly disagreed with them.

Natlan’s plotline was the most beautiful in the entire story so far. Incadescent Ode of Resurrection is still a masterpiece.

But, these complainers will finally get what they want when Nod-Krai comes out. It’s has that ghostly melancholy vibe like a mixture of Ghost in the Shell and Dark Souls.

It looks like a really sad place to be, and I’m here for it.

We’ll Find Out How This Connects to Celestia

Nod-Krai is not a small pit-stop before Snezhnaya.

It’s cannon.

That leads me to believe that whatever is going down here is tied to the predicament brewing in Celestia, which is the core of everyone’s problems.

Here, the Traveler should learn about the primordial power of the moon and get clues to how the original seven elements formed.

That means we get to understand more about the composition of the gnoses, which will reveal the final clue about why the Tsaritsa wants them in the first place.

When Does Nod-Krai Come Out?

Nod-Krai is expected to be released on September 10th, 2025 in Version 6.0.

So, the region’s debut is officially a month away.

And I’m certain there are millions of fans like me that are impatiently waiting.
