After another brilliant episode, we got yet another banger.
In ■■■■’s Memories II, Spy x Family Season 3 Episode 40, we got to see the aftermath of the attack on Westalis.
It was dark, man.
Loid’s hometown was bombed relentlessly. His mother managed to find him and bring him to her relatives’ house, but during a random bombing a few days later, she and his extended family were killed when a bomb caved in the entire house.
Loid then drifted for a while and became a soldier, even though he was underage at the time and took on a dead man’s identity. He was shown to be a good soldier though and developed some deceptive techniques.
But while alone in the forest, an unknown enemy soldier falls into a trap he sets and turns out, it’s Franky!!!

So, they actually met a long time ago. Franky is the same Franky we all know and love and him and Loid manage to have a philosophical talk on war.
Loid is not Twilight right now, so he’s extremely angry at Ostania, and by extension, Franky. This causes him to kick him and point his gun right in his face after Franky says Westalis blamed Ostania for the war (Franky admitted this was bullshit and people like them have to die for it).
But, Franky is saved by the bell and as soldiers shoot at both him and Loid. Both men escape and Loid ends up reuniting with his friends he thought were dead. They are indeed alive and Loid finally lets loose and cries.
But tragedy strikes again, and they are killed in battle.
Loid who has seen the worst parts of war loses his resolve and humanity for a while, questioning everything and realizing how powerless he is. We start to see his new thought process take shape and he reveals that ignorance is a sin.
Ignorance makes you a victim in a brutal war and has you fighting for something you know nothing about. Ignorance makes you powerless.
This is when he’s recruited by a man who knows exactly who he is.

He wants Loid to be a spy, and the rest is history. The man appeals to Loid’s M.O., telling him the greatest power in the world is information. If he has it, he won’t be powerless anymore.
Muah… chef’s kiss, baby.
This was a brilliant episode, probably one of the best Spy x Family has put out because of the emotional depth.
Loid has always been a sneaky little fellow, lying to his dad to play war games with his friends. Then he lies about his identity to join the war. Even the man who recruits him calls him a liar, so that’s the chief motif here.
The man would confirm this by comparing the world to one big onion, in that pulling back all the layers or “lies” makes you cry. Loid has saw this for himself after talking to Franky as he knows Westalis absolutely killed his parents and family and friends.
But he has no idea what started this war and has suspicion Ostania likely played a role, too. He then tells his recruiter, he doesn’t care for fighting for Ostania. He doesn’t disclose his reason for joining, but we now know it’s to stop all war so kids don’t have to live like him.
But, the ultimate gut punch was Loid waking up and seeing Anya who feels horrible about getting a Tonitrius Bolt, and telling her to treasure her friends. For once, he wasn’t thinking about the mission.

He symphathized with Anya being a child, someone who should not be going to school just to get good grades and be a pawn in his country’s schemes. She should just be a kid and treasure her friends, one because she’s a kid, and two because nobody even knows if war will begin again.
Loid brings up Damian and Anya instictively thinks about Plan B and trying to cozy up to him since it’s clear she’s not gonna be an Imperial Scholar based on her grades.
But Loid isn’t thinking about that and has a glimpse back to being with his friends, telling her to take care of hers. Up until now, we have never seen Loid this raw. He’s extremely guarded and is a very good liar.
He’s always focused on his mission and prides himself on being prepared and always on the ball.
But, that masks slips for once and he doesn’t even care.
Goddamn…
Loid will probably end up focusing right back on his mission because he’s trained to do that, but this flashback will likely stick with him for a while and make him hold his pretend family closer.
After all, as a spy, he could die at any time. If his mission fails, war will begin again. He already says he isn’t fighting for Ostania, and we know this because Loid isn’t a patriot and never brings up his hometown.
He is only concerned with creating a peaceful world for children and the innocent. This will affect how he sees Anya and Yor moving forward, as Loid finally has a family that’s alive and he would want it to stay that way.
Beautiful episode, guys.
Very beautiful.
My Grade:

Dante is Editor-in-Chief (Lord Hokage), which means he runs editorial and operations at BrandAnime. That means this whole thing was his idea, and he spends his time making stuff work and covering the latest anime and games. When he's not doing 100 things at once, he's usually... watching anime or playing games. His life isn't that interesting, honestly.
