Boy, last episode kicked off Season 3 in the best way.
But, I was really waiting on this one.
By now, we know that Loid, also known as Twilight, experienced war at a young age and is determined to avoid this outcome at all costs. It’s why he’s extremely dedicated to Operation Strix and keeping up his facade of a family (even though he’s growing very fond of them).
In this episode, we finally got to see some of Loid’s childhood, and it was incredibly presented.
But first, we got some slapstick comedy that featured Anya being the lovable dummy she is.
Madam Schlag, a grisled old discplinarian, stops by Eden Academy to give out Tonitrius Bolts to delinquent students.
Only, she’s handing them out with these dramatic ass animations that look straight out of Dragon Ball Z:

She walked right into Mr. Henderson’s class to assess his students and started handing out Tonitrius Bolts left and right.
She gave one kid one for not having a hankerchief on him.
Damon realizing that he didn’t have his started to panic and knew if he got a Tonitrius Bolt, his father would never speak to him again.
So, Anya hands him her hanky at the last minute, pulling a Loid Forger and declaring that she had two of them on her.
But, of course… she didn’t.
And she gets a Tonitrius Bolt, but hey, Damon said he would make it up to her by baking her a cake so… I guess that’s a win.
Loid still fainted though when he heard the news.
After this hilarious exchange, we got to see Loid’s parents, a stern father and kind mother. Loid, much like the kids of his day, believed that Ostania were dogs trying to get over on them in Westalis.
They play war games like the dumb kids they are, and Loid father immediately backhands him after pointing out he should be studying and not playing with toy guns. But Loid has a backbone for his age and storms off.
He then lies to his father the next day saying could he have allowance to buy a book and his dad actually looks happy and obliges. He then uses this money to buy weapons for his friends.
They’re adorable and innocent kids for sure and ask the locals do they really think Ostania will attack as most are sure it won’t happen and peace will continue.
One old man believes Ostania will attack but most ignore him. But, the heartbreaking scene of the episode happens when Loid talks to a shopkeeper who says she has relatives in Ostania and that they’re not all dogs.
I, and I’m sure Loid, begin to believe her but the bombs start going off around the city.
Then, the radio gives a chilling message that Ostania has launched an attack and are now inside the border as Loid is knocked back by an explosion.
Whoa…
They got straight to the point, and you really have to give it up to the producers here for nailing the pacing of the entire flashback.

Now, we’re not sure if Loid’s friends are dead (they probably are) or what happens to his parents, but the next episode teaser shows him growing up in poverty and a war-torn nation so we can pretty much guess shit really hit the fan.
This was an amazing episode, and indicative of why Spy x Family is one of the best anime of this generation. We got to laugh at Anya’s ridiculous antics one minute, are glued to the screeen watching Loid the next, and then watch the bombs go off right in Loid’s face right at the end.

The radio announcing Ostania’s raid and the bombs going off right in the middle of the shopkeeper’s optimistic rant was chef’s kiss.
Oh, and the ED, Actor, was straight heat, too. Shoutout to Lilas Ikuta.
And, I absolutely can’t wait for the next episode.
My Grade:

Dante is Editor-in-Chief (Lord Hokage), which means he runs editorial and operations at BrandAnime. That means this whole thing was his idea, and he spends his time making stuff work and covering the latest anime and games. When he's not doing 100 things at once, he's usually... watching anime or playing games. His life isn't that interesting, honestly.
