When it comes to jutsu in the Naruto universe, the line between powerful and outright broken is thin… and sometimes it completely disappears.
From the legendary Uchiha techniques to the mind-bending abilities of the Hokage, Naruto’s world is packed with moves that make you wonder how anyone ever stands a chance against these shinobi.
Here, we’re diving into the most overpowered jutsu in Naruto—the ones that just don’t seem fair.
1. Minato’s Flying Thunder God Jutsu (Hiraishin no Jutsu)
Minato Namikaze, the Yellow Flash, didn’t get that title for nothing. His Flying Thunder God Jutsu isn’t just OP—it’s downright impossible to counter unless you have the same level of speed.
This jutsu allows Minato to teleport to any location marked with his special seal in the blink of an eye. Not only is this incredible for dodging attacks, but Minato also uses it for quick strikes and saving his comrades.
Imagine trying to fight an opponent who’s never in the same spot for more than a second. It’s like fighting a shadow—except the shadow can hit you back. Minato made speed an ultimate weapon.
2. Itachi’s Yata Mirror & Totsuka Blade
Itachi Uchiha isn’t just a tragic character; he’s an absolute powerhouse. When it comes to broken jutsu, his Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade are in a league of their own.
The Yata Mirror is a defensive tool that can block any attack, regardless of the nature of the attack—physical or elemental. It’s said to have the power to reflect anything, making Itachi nearly invulnerable.
Then there’s the Totsuka Blade, which seals whatever it strikes into an eternal genjutsu-like state, leaving them trapped forever. Together, these two pieces of equipment elevate Itachi’s already monstrous abilities to another level—making him essentially unbeatable unless you can figure out how to counter his entire arsenal. Spoiler: You can’t.
3. Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu)
Edo Tensei is the jutsu that brings the dead back to life… and it does so with some disturbing perks. Originally created by Tobirama Senju and perfected by the braintrust of Orochimaru and Kabuto, this jutsu allows the user to summon deceased individuals and bring them back to life in their prime, with no fear of death.
The summoner can control the reanimated individuals, and they heal instantly—yes, even after being decapitated or dismembered. The catch? These reanimated shinobi don’t feel pain, they don’t age, and they cannot be killed unless their bodies are destroyed.
So, if you’re facing an army of powerful dead shinobi with absolutely zero limitations, how do you even fight back? The answer is: You don’t.
What makes Edo Tensei truly broken is how it played a pivotal role in the Fourth Great Shinobi War. Orochimaru and Kabuto perfected this technique, resurrecting some of the most legendary and powerful shinobi in history, including the First Hokage and Madara Uchiha.
Their decision to use this jutsu turned the tide of the war and brought the dead back to challenge the living—essentially starting the chaos of the entire war.
Edo Tensei single-handedly created an unstoppable army that no one could match at the time, making it one of the most terrifying and broken techniques in the series.
4. Naruto’s Shadow Clone Jutsu (Kage Bunshin no Jutsu)
On the surface, Naruto’s Shadow Clone Jutsu seems like just a simple technique to make copies of yourself. But once you take a deeper look, it’s clear this jutsu is one of the most broken in the series. Not only can it create hundreds of clones, but each clone also possesses the user’s abilities and can act independently.
The real kicker?
The memories of the clones return to the original Naruto once they’re dispelled, which means he gets to train his mind and body at an exponentially faster rate than normal.
This ability turned Naruto from a scrappy kid with a dream into one of the most powerful shinobi in the world. It’s like training multiple lifetimes in one day, and it doesn’t even cost that much chakra for Naruto due to his insane chakra reserves.
5. Onoki’s Jinton (Particle Style)
The Third Tsuchikage, Onoki, possesses one of the most terrifying jutsu in all of Naruto: Jinton (Particle Style). This technique allows the user to disintegrate anything they touch into dust by breaking down its molecular structure.
A single touch can erase entire landscapes, and that’s not even counting Onoki’s ability to perform this jutsu from a distance. He can also combine it with other elemental techniques for even more destruction, which gives him a terrifying edge.
And don’t forget, he could use this technique on a large scale, causing massive devastation across entire battlefields. The only thing more dangerous than a Jinton attack is a Jinton attack that comes out of nowhere, which is what makes it so broken.
6. Death Reaper Seal (Shinigami No Fuuin)
The Death Reaper Seal, used by the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, is a double-edged sword. It summons the Death God to seal away an opponent’s soul, but in the process, the user also sacrifices their own soul.
What makes this technique OP isn’t just its immense power—it’s the sheer risk and desperation it conveys. Minato used it to seal the Nine-Tails inside Naruto, and Hiruzen used it to seal Orochimaru’s arms.
Essentially, this jutsu can end lives and steal powers with the cost of the user’s soul. That’s one hell of a gamble, but when it works, it’s devastatingly effective.
7. Shisui Uchiha’s Kotoamatsukami
Shisui Uchiha’s Kotoamatsukami is perhaps one of the most dangerous genjutsu in the Naruto world. It allows Shisui to manipulate a target’s will completely, without them even being aware they’re being controlled.
Everyone wanted this ability, from Obito to Danzo.
This is an almost perfect genjutsu, as it can affect the most powerful shinobi without them realizing what’s happening. Not only is it incredibly difficult to defend against, but once someone is affected, their actions become entirely dictated by Shisui’s will.
This makes Shisui’s power incredibly broken, as it essentially gives him the ability to control others without lifting a finger.
8. Izanagi (The Uchiha’s “God Mode”)
Izanagi is the Uchiha clan’s ultimate weapon—a jutsu that alters reality itself. This forbidden jutsu allows the user to turn any fatal injury into an illusion, effectively giving them the ability to rewrite the outcome of any battle.
Used with the Sharingan, Izanagi can make the user invincible for a short time by making the body’s wounds disappear. The trade-off is that the user loses the ability to use that specific Sharingan permanently.
While it sounds like the ultimate cheat code, the cost is immense—once used, the user’s eye is sacrificed forever. Still, when it’s used, it’s the ultimate trump card for any battle.
Now, come on.
This is literally a cheat code and Danzo exposed how broken it was in his fight with Sasuke. If only he wasn’t an idiot (sure Sasuke had some plot armor), he would’ve beat Sasuke and put up a serious challenge against Obito.
Other Honorable Mentions:
Here are some additional broken jutsu worth mentioning:
- Amaterasu: The Uchiha’s black flames that burn endlessly. If you get hit with these flames, you’re pretty much screwed unless you have some way to extinguish them.
- Kirin: Sasuke’s lightning-based technique is not only an amazing display of power, but it also goes from 0 to 100 in an instant, summoning lightning to obliterate enemies at a massive scale.
- Rinnegan’s Six Paths of Pain: The Rinnegan grants access to six different bodies, each with its own specialized ability. It’s an army of invincible soldiers, controlled by one person—what’s not broken about that?
- Tsukuyomi: Another Uchiha jutsu, Tsukuyomi is one of the most powerful genjutsu techniques, allowing the user to trap their target in an illusion so intense that they experience days, months, or years of torment in mere seconds.
The Final Verdict
Kishimoto created a world brimming with characters whose abilities defy logic and reason, and many of them are so overpowered that they seem almost unfair.
The Flying Thunder God, Edo Tensei, Izanagi, and more are all testament to just how ridiculously powerful these jutsu are. But at the end of the day, these OP abilities make for some of the most exciting moments in Naruto—and remind us that in the ninja world, power often comes with a great price.
From Edo Tensei kickstarting the Fourth Great Shinobi War to the Izanagi mind-bending reality, these techniques show just how far the shinobi world is willing to go in search of ultimate power.
