So, the question that always comes up: “Is Itachi really stronger than Jiraiya?” At first glance, the answer seems clear—Itachi has the edge. With the Sharingan, Amaterasu, and his mind-boggling genjutsu abilities, he’s a powerhouse.

But then you look at their confrontation where Itachi ran away from Jiraiya, and fans start wondering if Kishimoto was trying to show Itachi as humble, not wanting to fight a comrade and a legend like Jiraiya.

I think it’s a little bit of both, but there’s more to it. Sure, Itachi didn’t want to fight a fellow shinobi, but there’s also the fact that he was already at his limit after battling Kakashi and using Tsukuyomi on Sasuke, not to mention his sick condition.

Jiraiya, while not as physically powerful, had his own set of unique abilities, tricks, and tactical genius. So, let’s break it down.

Itachi Was Already Weakened Before Facing Jiraiya

Let’s not forget that Itachi wasn’t at full strength when he ran into Jiraiya. By the time he confronted him, Itachi had already fought Kakashi and put himself through a lot of physical strain with his Tsukuyomi battle against Sasuke.

Add to that his terminal illness, which made him physically weak and drained his stamina. Itachi wasn’t about to fight someone as powerful as Jiraiya knowing full well that the battle could end with both of them dead.

Itachi was strategic, and this isn’t about pride—he knew his limits. A fight against Jiraiya wouldn’t have been a clean victory for Itachi. Even though he had the upper hand in raw power, he would’ve likely died too because of his weakened state. Itachi’s greatest strength was his ability to think ahead, and he chose the safer option by retreating.

Jiraiya’s Unconventional Abilities: Putting Itachi in a Toad’s Belly

Now, Jiraiya may not have the flashy, game-breaking powers that some of the strongest shinobi have, but he is the only person to ever seal Amaterasu. That says a lot about him.

Jiraiya, instead of relying on overwhelming brute force, had a knack for unpredictable, crafty moves. One of the most bizarre yet effective things he did was putting Itachi and Kisame inside a toad’s stomach. Yeah, you read that right—a giant toad’s stomach. This seems so out of left field, but it was actually a genius strategy.

While many characters rely on super cool abilities, Jiraiya literally planned to kill them by sticking them in a toad. Sure, Amaterasu and Kisame’s shark attacks are powerful, but Jiraiya used an unconventional trap that, if Itachi hadn’t used the Sharingan to escape, could have been their demise.

The fact that he had this weird and effective strategy goes to show that Jiraiya’s strengths didn’t always come from raw power but from his wit and ability to outsmart his enemies.

Itachi’s Tactical Genius: Not Just About Power

Itachi wasn’t just a powerhouse. The man was a master tactician. Obito himself feared Itachi’s mind, not just his physical prowess. Itachi could outsmart you before you even had a chance to fight him, and that’s why he was considered a massive threat even though he wasn’t as physically imposing as other characters.

This ability to plan your death before you even knew you were at risk is what made him so terrifying.

Think about how Sasuke thought he had Itachi cornered. He had everything lined up, ready to take down his brother. But Itachi was already five steps ahead, using his genjutsu to turn the tables. Even Kisame had to trust Itachi’s foresight when it came to planning their actions—Itachi was always thinking long-term.

Jiraiya’s Craftiness and Wisdom: Tricking Pain and His Hidden Strengths

Jiraiya wasn’t just a brute-force fighter either. Pain learned this the hard way. When Jiraiya faced Pain in battle, he was able to hold his own against one of the strongest forces in the world despite knowing he was severely outnumbered. His strategic mind and ability to adapt made him a formidable opponent even when he was at a disadvantage.

Had Pain not been hiding the other six bodies, Jiraiya would have had a real shot at taking him down. Jiraiya’s intelligence and ability to surprise his enemies were major reasons he could challenge even the most powerful foes.

Shikamaru, Konan, and the Third Hokage: It’s Not Just About Power

One thing that Naruto makes clear is that battles aren’t always won by sheer power. It’s about strategy. For example, Shikamaru was able to outsmart Hidan, even though Hidan was literally immortal. Shikamaru turned his lack of physical power into a strategic advantage, setting up an elaborate trap that led to Hidan’s downfall.

Konan almost killed Obito by using endless origami vortex to trap him, nearly catching him off guard and exploiting his vulnerability. Then there’s Hiruzen Sarutobi, who pulled out the deadliest trump card against Orochimaru—using the Shiki Fūjin to seal Orochimaru’s arms despite his immortality (and if he was 10 years younger, he would’ve won like Orochimaru claimed).

All these characters show that strategy is often the deciding factor in Naruto battles, and Itachi understood this better than anyone, which is why he chose to retreat when the stakes were too high.

Does Itachi Really Beat Jiraiya?

In a straight-up battle, Itachi probably edges Jiraiya in terms of raw power, especially considering his Sharingan and Amaterasu. However, Jiraiya wasn’t someone to underestimate, and his unpredictable nature and strategic mind made him a dangerous opponent even for someone like Itachi.

Itachi’s decision to flee wasn’t just about pride—he knew he was running low on chakra, he was physically ill, and most importantly, he understood that a battle with Jiraiya could result in both of their deaths. Itachi was a tactician, and sometimes, knowing when to retreat is the best decision.

Plus, Jiraiya’s weird jutsu, like sealing Amaterasu in a toad’s stomach, proved that raw power isn’t always the deciding factor in Naruto battles.

In the end, both Itachi and Jiraiya were legends, but their strengths were different. Jiraiya had the tricks, and Itachi had the strategy—and that’s why we love both of them.
