Spoilers are below. You’ve been warned!
So, what happened in the My Apothecary Diaries Season 2 ending?
In the final arc, Maomao uncovers the Shi clan’s large-scale poisoning plot and uses a high-risk resurrection drug to save Shisui and the children.
The treatment works, but little Kyou loses all memory of who he was. With quiet determination, Maomao adopts him alongside her father Luomen. There’s no reward—just the heavy cost of doing the right thing.
Here are some key developments during the ending of My Apothecary Diaries:
Lady Gyokuyou Claims her Crown
The Shi clan falls from grace, and Gyokuyou ascends as Empress Consort. It’s a win for dignity over ambition. While Jinshi helps clear the path politically, Maomao’s medical insight is what turns the tide.
Jinshi and Maomao Finally Connect
After a long emotional stalemate, Maomao reaches out—literally. She touches Jinshi’s scar and praises it.
He embraces her in return. It’s a rare, raw moment that hints at deeper feelings but stops short of resolution. Their connection is stronger, but not defined.
Kyou and the Brothel District
Maomao chooses to return to the pleasure district, now with Kyou in her care. She says her goodbye to Jinshi with quiet finality.
Her story continues, but far from the palace halls and imperial drama—for now.
Not long after the second season ending, we got a brand new teaser for the next one:
The teaser opens with Jinshi dressed in formal robes at a remote fortress. He receives a sealed letter from Loulan, suggesting an official duty outside the Inner Court.
The scene shifts to expansive wheat fields, with Maomao’s voice narrating a shift in the wind—both literal and symbolic. A single phrase fades onto the screen: “The story heads to new lands.
This confirms that Season 3 will break away from the tight, cloistered palace setting. It’s likely we’ll explore Gyokuyou’s homeland or a regional stronghold, based on the teaser’s imagery.
Expect unfamiliar landscapes, new traditions, and fresh dangers for Maomao to navigate—especially in the form of regional diseases or environmental threats.
Jinshi appears front and center in the teaser, reflecting on Maomao’s hairpin. His expression is quiet, conflicted, and full of weight. It’s clear Season 3 will dive deeper into his responsibilities, identity, and emotions—especially those tied to Maomao.
Season 3 was officially greenlit immediately following the finale of Season 2. According to statements from the production team and the light novels’ author Natsu Hyūga, the next arc is a major turning point for both leads.
Not only does it push them out of their comfort zones, it forces them to confront the bond between them in new, unfamiliar circumstances.
What to Expect in My Apothecary Diaries Season 3
| Element | What’s Changing |
|---|---|
| Setting | Remote provinces, possibly foreign regions or borderlands |
| Focus | Jinshi’s backstory, Maomao’s evolving role, new political landscapes |
| Tone | More mystery, heightened emotional stakes, and deeper character arcs |
| Relationships | The dynamic between Maomao and Jinshi matures under pressure |
My Apothecary Season 3 is in the Works
Season 2 closes the book on the Shi clan arc, but leaves plenty open between Maomao and Jinshi.
The Season 3 teaser makes it clear: the story is going somewhere new. Physically, emotionally, politically—it’s all shifting. Maomao’s medical genius and Jinshi’s hidden identity will be tested like never before.

Dante is Editor-in-Chief (Lord Hokage), which means he runs editorial and operations at BrandAnime. That means this whole thing was his idea, and he spends his time making stuff work and covering the latest anime and games. When he's not doing 100 things at once, he's usually... watching anime or playing games. His life isn't that interesting, honestly.
